Across much of the US, winter brings freezing temperatures, low humidity and indoor heating. Together they pull moisture out of your skin. If your face feels tight after washing, or your hands and legs get flaky, it is time to switch to a winter skincare routine.
1. Switch to a gentle, hydrating cleanser
Foaming cleansers can strip natural oils. A creamy, non-foaming cleanser like CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser cleans without leaving skin tight. Wash with lukewarm water, not hot.
2. Moisturize while skin is still damp
Apply moisturizer within a minute of washing to lock in water. Look for ceramides and hyaluronic acid, which help repair your skin barrier. La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair and Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer are favorites for sensitive skin.
3. Use a richer cream at night
Your skin repairs itself overnight. A thicker night cream such as CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream or CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion gives extra hydration while you sleep.
4. Don't forget your body
Legs, arms and hands often get the driest in winter. After a shower, use a body cream like CeraVe Moisturizing Cream, Cetaphil Face & Body Moisturizer or the cozy-scented eos Shea Better Body Lotion in Vanilla Cashmere.
5. Keep wearing sunscreen
UV rays still reach your skin on cloudy winter days, and snow reflects sunlight. A lightweight daily SPF such as EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 protects without feeling heavy.
6. Go easy on exfoliating
Strong scrubs and acids can irritate dry winter skin. Exfoliate once or twice a week at most, and always follow with moisturizer.
Quick winter skin tips
